The 2013 Winters are suporting up and coming champs !

Representing Australia overseas this year, Max Quirk and James Hodgson, who attend Matthew Flinders Anglican College in Buderim and are 13 years old, have both qualified for the Australian Optimist Sailing Team having successfully competed in the 2013 Optimist Nationals in Hobart in January 2013.

Max has qualified for the Optimist World Championships in Lake Garda, Italy in July and James will compete in the Asian Championships in Hayama, Japan in August.

Max Quirk and James Hodgson

The boys will be active during the Winters raising funds through raffle sales (with some great prizes !) so they can represent Australia at these regattas.

Both Max and James have been very successful junior Optimist sailors over the past 2 years. Max represented Australia in the Asian Championships in 2012 and NZ Nationals 2013 and has had great success in local and interstate regattas, including winning the 2012 NSW Youths Championship and Victorian States, and achieving top 3 finishes in Qld States 2012, Sail Sydney 2012 and NSW States 2012 and 2013. Max is a member of the QLD Sailing Development Squad in the Laser class in 2013.

James also competed in the Asian Championships in 2012, representing Hong Kong, prior to relocating back to the Sunshine Coast, as well as representing Australia at the NZ Nationals 2013. He won the 2012 Queensland Youth Championship and has had consistent top 10 results in interstate regattas including 2012 Qld States, Sail Sydney 2012, Sail Mooloolaba 2012. He also competes successfully in other dinghy classes winning the 2012 and 2013 Sunshine Coast Schools Regatta and is a member of the QLD Sailing Development Squad in the 420 class in 2013.

Both sailors have great potential to develop further within the Yachting Australia / AIS sailing pathways program and are great role models to encourage the development of youth sailing on the Sunshine Coast.
